What is spirulina? Spirulina is a blue-green algae that is a rich source of nutrients such as proteins, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. For skin care, spirulina is said to offer many benefits such as protecting the skin from free radical damage, reducing inflammation, and preventing premature aging, fights acne bacteria, moisturizes and hydrates, collegan production, detoxification, and much more. This statement has not been approved by the FDA. In general, the FDA does not approve of supplemental dietary ingredients, however, it does consider spirulina “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) and approves its use as a color additive in various foods and beverages.
